My name is NOT Khan

I was watching the DVD of My Name Is Khan. Two issues stand out in the film, the plight of the Muslim community in the aftermath of 9/11 and the autistic individuals attempt to redeem his pride and honour thereof.
In the portrayal of the life of an autistic, it appears a very amateurish attempt, as it is and inevitably will be compared to the compelling performance of Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man and Tom Hanks in Forest Gump. Even the performance of Hrithik Roshan as a mentally retarded character in Koi Mil Gaya was more convincing.
On the other issue of the plight of the Muslim in post 9/11 US, the film seems to be a very puerile effort. It does not adequately bring out the psyche of the non Muslim toward a community viewed as the direct perpetrator of hate and revenge towards the American. There were scores of American and non American families in the apartments right across the Hudson who were actual witnesses to the demolition of the twin towers and that horrific experience is a lingering nightmare for them. Some of them became psychological wrecks. One cannot just gloss over their plight and raise questions on the attitude of the average American and portray it as irrational, illogical and uncalled for.”What did I do” is a rhetorical question both sides ask. The attempt to straighten out the emotions through a humanitarian effort in a flood ravaged city is an escapist side tracking, which is so common in tight situations in our films. Infuse an emotional episode to eke out a solution to a complex emotional and behavioral dilemma.
When we raise grown up issues we need grown up solutions and answers.
Sometime back I received an e-mail titled "My name is not Khan" It was from one of the Kashmiri Hindus forced out of their homeland. He wrote of how his parents were shot dead, his sister raped and their house looted by the muslim extremists.Fate saved him as he was not home at the time. The irony is that his is not an isolated case.Yet no Karan Johar, or anyone else, ever makes a movie about him and his plight or of others like him because as he rightly states "My name is not Khan".
