THAT NIGHT IN GAUHATI

First, it was Roop Kanwar and the revival of sati, then it was VP and Mandal and the resurrection of the caste system. Now it is that night in Gauhati and the re-enactment of Dropdi's 'cheerharan'. Viva! India on the move.
When Dushshasan  dragged Dropdi by her hair and tried to disrobe her in open court, some issues came to the fore.
Why did the learned patriarch Bhishm remain silent. It was reasoned that he was bound by his oath to protect the Hastinapur rajya and its king. Was his allegiance to the Raja or the praja? The praja is deemed paramount in all our scriptures and edicts. Was he even bound to defend and endure all the blatant acts of outrage by the king? He was then as much a party to the sins and crime of the king. How then does that make Bhishm the embodiment of integrity and unimpeachable character?
Dropdi questions Vidhur on the legal and ethical aspect of Yudhishtra staking her.Vidhur has no answer.
No one in the court of Dhitrashtra tries to desist Dushshasan either on moral, ethical or legal grounds
Apparently, they were all waiting for and looking forward to Dropdi loosing her clothes. So was Gauhati that night!
The NCW then made its appearance The media had been gracious enough not to reveal the victims identity
A member of the NCW team did just that at the press conference What compassion and concern! As a damage control, she was promptly dropped from the team, thankfully
The NCW chairman then made a statement about ladies dressing carefully to avoid inviting attacks and outrages. Appropriate indeed!
Wonder why female dress 'provocatively' It may be that they find these clothes comfortable' If so what is the harm We all have the right to dress confortably.I dont see the point of wearing a suit and tie in blistering heat
Do they dress so to 'display' and draw attention? In that case they succeed only too well. I mean there are the Poonam Pandeys and Sherlyn Chopras Now it is natural that out of many such admirers one may give in to the temptation of groping and grabbing.Don't the exquisitely dressed showrooms attract an ocassional breakin.
There is a thin line between discretion and valour, as is between prudence and indulgence, but we have to draw the line somewhere, sometime, somehow.
